Breathing and anxiety

I’m always surprised at how effective the simple act of breathing can have when there are feelings of anxiety – breathing can have a significant impact on those feelings of anxiety.

There’s only one slight modification to how you would breath, rather than short breaths you take long deep breaths. Try this, get yourself comfortable, breath in over a count of 4 and breath out over a count of 4. That’s it! Add a bit of mindfulness in there thinking of nothing else but each breath and you should start to feel calmer. Check these links out or do a quick Google search and you’ll find loads of info on this useful techniques.

THERE’S A MENTAL HEALTH CRISES IN CANADA

For quite sometime now I’ve thought of writing a blog, problem is I have a great deal of difficulty writing. But like unlike many people with ideas it’s a struggle to get it down on paper. My solution is to write and publish and as long as what I’m writing isn’t confusing or scattered I’m good to go. So here it is, my first post and it’s to do with mental health among other things.

Canada is currently experiencing a mental health crises and it’s destroying the ability for many individuals to function, this is particularly true for youth. Every year there’s more and more people in crises, many are reaching out for help but many suffer alone and in silence not knowing where to turn. Many dedicated individuals across the country are stepping up to help with what is an unprecedented crises. For example, the Kids Help Phone responded to 4 million individuals reaching out for help in 2020, this is up from 1.9 million in 2019.

My goal with this blog is to share some of the tools I’ve learned to be effective at calming those that are in crises. Some of the techniques I’ve learned are as simple as breathing and others are a little more involved such as 5-4-3-2-1 grounding techniques.

I’v also started to have an interest in stoicism – there’s some major self-care strategies taken from there. My hope is that what I share will be useful to someone.

Thanks for reading.
